Finsbury Circus

Finsbury Circus is an oasis of greenery in The City – the financial heart of London. Its borders are congruent with and subject to the gaze of the imposing early twentieth century terraces which curve round it. It contains various places to sit and lunch, bushes, trees, a bandstand and a bowling green. Sounds quintessentially English ‘n’est-ce pas’?

Green space is at a premium in the City, so during the summer, between the hours of 12 and 2, it’s almost impossible to find a decent squared foot of bum space to enjoy your ‘parma ham and sundried tomato’ on ciabatta.

The serenity of the bowling green and relative quietude of the circus soothes the condition of the City worker and whispers reminders about what life is all about. In the meantime the bankers, insurers and petrochemical companies based in the surrounding terraces are busy burning up the world.

“One day we’ll have all the money in the world but nothing to spend it on”. Finsbury Circus will always have a special place in our hearts as we count our coins and eat dirt.

Finsbury Circus was constructed in the early nineteenth century and was originally the site of various medical establishments, including London’s first eye specialists. Up until the twentieth century the gardens were private. Public access was secured in 1900.
