| The Gherkin, City of London @www.ravishlondon.com The Gherkin with its curvaceous shape did feel a little odd on the London skyline at first. However with the passing of time both it and the Millennium Wheel defined a post-modern skyline which suggested a brave new architectural world for London at the beginning of the century. The official name for the Gherkin is 30 St May Axe. The Gherkin owes its existence in part to the IRA, as it stands on the former site of the Baltic Exchange, which was the last remaining trading floor in London, which was bombed by the Republican movement in 1992. Many feel the Gherkin is a very explicit recognition of architects’ phallic pride. Accordingly one names used for the Gherkin is The Towering Innuendo. Unfortunately the stand alone beauty of the gherkin is being drowned by a morass of comparatively ordinary glass towers being built alongside it. So much for the brave new world. It is owned by Germans. |
