| Petticoat Lane Market @www.ravishlondon.com Petticoat Lane Market, which dates back to 1603, is full of Indians and Bangladeshis, saying 'alright darling' in a strong Asian accent. The ‘petticoat’ part of the name comes from the ladies' undergarments which were once sold by the French Huguenots, who moved to the area in the seventeenth century, fleeing religious persecution. It might be Asians and Africans who are dominating the trade today, but in the 1800s it was Jews, which explains why the busiest market day is on the Sabbath. I always feel a bit uneasy walking down Petticoat Market, like something dodgy is about to happen. I often wonder if anyone ever buys those t-shirts saying London on them. They must do. I always see African men checking out the shirts - African men like wearing shirts. If a Black guy is wearing a casual style shirt hanging loose over a pair of casual trousers – he’s from somewhere in Africa. |
