Café on Wentworth Street, Spitalfields
@www.ravishlondon.com

I love this café, which sits on Wentworth Street, home of Petticoat Lane Market. It’ is a true oasis of peace from the city bustle, and yet only a stone's throw away from the nearest financial transaction.

It must be one of the worse decorated cafés in London, both outside and inside, and is usually hidden away behind one of the outdoor clothes stalls.

So God knows how it gets any custom but believe me it does.

It is run by an affable Italian guy who seems to have become an adopted cockney.

There’s no messing around with the food, home-cooking style, cheap and tasty with no pretensions. You can get greasy spoon or more wholesome dishes like meatballs, chicken curry and lamb stew.

Furthermore, its tatty interior, gives it a true east end working class feel. Any monied professional walking through the door soon looses his superiority complex.

Big groups come in from the City at lunch time, but they seem more bawdy, cockney and crude than your average City slicker.

There's copies of the Star and the Sun to read, and if you want a piss, you have to walk up the stairs, through some unused room on the second floor, out on to the flat roof, and then into a shed like construction. It’s a real outhouse pisser!

I love this place.
