| The Washingon Hotel, Mayfair @www.ravishlondon.com One grey low-lit Sunday afternoon in early January I was approached by someone calling themselves the manager of the art-deco Washington Hotel. She asked me if she could be of any help in anyway. I knew she was actually asking me in a very polite manner 'what are you doing?' but I informed her 'No I don't think you can.' I had just had a policeman threatening to confiscate my camera and detain me as a suspected terrorist if I took any more photographs of the Saudi Embassy. I didn't need this. I was leant against a lamp post taking pictures of the many mattresses she had laid out on the street. They were about to be carted off to a mass mattress burial site. Out with the old and in with new. She was worried that I might be from Westminster Council. Internet reviews of this hotel suggest that whilst a number of visitors enjoyed their stay, others were not so happy. In January 2008 the website said that rooms here cost £45 per night. |
