| Olympics Art, Broadgate Tower @www.ravishlondon.com During the winter of 2007 British Land mounted a piece of art on building boards outside Broadgate Tower. It’s difficult to make out what was being said on the art from the photograph, but essentially it concerns a child explaining that art made him think about the Olympics, which in turn inspired him to become a better person. This supposed ‘message from a child’ sound suspiciously like the message a young Baron de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic games, might have come out with had he been asked. De Coubertin created the Olympics out of a desire to promote physical activity and sport as a means through which men could develop their strength and courage, and rid themselves of any disquiets or uncertainties. However isn’t the Olympics just a civilised attempt to aspire to fascist ideals? One website on the net states that De Coubertin in his later years, received heavy financial support from Hitler, after he had supported the allocation of the 1936 Olympics to Berlin. Maybe you can get better at doing a particular thing, like playing tennis, but playing better tennis doesn't make you a better person does it? Messages telling us we can be better people will always make us miserable. How can you be happy, if you can't accept yourself as the person you are? We don't need anymore messages like this in London inspiring us to be 'better people' - we are all alright already. |
