| The Horse and Groom, Shoreditch @www.ravishlondon.com The Horse and Groom sits at the southern end of the Old Street pub and bar scene. It was renovated in the summer of 2007 and has deeply dark wooden floorboards and furniture, with posh old fashioned leather sofas and seats, and a wide screen TV mounted in a picture frame over a fire place. The overall effect is cosy, intimate and old East End. In this sense it is rather different to the bohemian kitsch of the Shoreditch scene and the city boy bars further south. Until March 2008 I had always considered the Horse and Groom as a great place to go to start the night off, time to relax and an environment in which one can talk. But 15th March changed all that when the pub hosted Nerds. The pub was transformed, packed to the rafters with the Shoreditch art and design crowd turning up in nerdish outfits, one guy wearing a monitor with keyboards hanging about his body – the rafters were bombastically bending to retrospective kitschy pop music like S-Express, Black Box, Outkast, Les Rita Mitsuoko drizzled with more obscure funky dance numbers. It was a fantastic night which showcased the get up and go, dressing up, imaginative spirit of the Shoreditch art set. |
